10 Inventions Of NASA Used Every Day

1. Invisible Braces. Many t eenagers cringe at the prospect of braces. Getting one's teeth in order used to mean enduring a mouth full of metal, but not so anymore. Invisible braces hit the market in 1987, and now there are multiple brands.

2. Scratch-resistant Lenses. If you drop a pair of eyeglasses on the ground, the lenses probably won't break. That's because in 1972, the Food and Drug Administration began requiring manufacturers to use plastic rather than glass to make lenses.

3. Memory Foam. NASA helps some people sleep better at night. Temper foam found in Tempurpedic brand mattresses and similar brands was originally developed for space flight and later repackaged for the home.

4. Ear Thermometer. Taking y our temperature when sick can be tricky business. A standard mercury thermometer can prove difficult to read, and a rectal one is just plain uncomfortable. In 1991, infrared thermometers that you place into your ears took the work out of it, simplifying and speeding up the process.

5. Shoe Insoles. Wh en Neil Armstrong famously spoke of "one giant leap for mankind," he probably didn't foresee the literal connotation it would come to have. Today's athletic shoes have borrowed the technology of the moon boots that first took that leap.

6. Long-distance Telecommunications. The ability to carry on long - distance telephone conversations did not happen overnight. It doesn't link back to one specific NASA invention - improved telecommunication took place over decades of work.

7. Adjustable Smoke Detector. Where there's smoke, there's fire. NASA engineers knew that simple fact when they were designing Skylab in the 1970s. Skylab was the first U.S. space station, and the astronauts would need to know if a fire had started or if noxious gases were loose in the vehicle.

8. Safety Grooving. Carving a gro ove into concrete may not sound like much of an innovation, but it certainly keeps us safe on the roads.

9. Cordless Tools. When you're sucking up bits of dirt or crumbs around the house with a handheld cordless vacuum, you are actually using the same technology that astronauts used on the moon. Although Black & Decker had already invented the first battery-powered tools in 1961 [source: NASA], the NASA-related research helped refine the technology that led to lightweight, cordless medical instruments, hand-held vacuum cleaners and other tools.

10. Water Filters. Astronauts needed a way to cleanse water they take up into space, since bacteria and sickness would be highly problematic. Water filter technology had existed since the early 1950s, but NASA wanted to know how to clean water in more extreme situations and keep it clean for longer periods of time.

Who is The Real Animal - "Man Or Animal"

February 14, 2010 is Chinese New Year and it’s the year of Tiger, which is always a symbol of majesty and courage. The Chinese people have honored the tiger as “King of All Beasts” since ancient times. Also, Chinese call the outstanding athletes on the arena as “Tiger General”, meaning the athletes boasts their own incredible bravery and power just as the tigers.

The following combo-photos show the similar expressions of both the maneaters and athletes. So, those athletes are tigers reborn?

1. Whose tongue longer? The tiger or LeBron James from Cleveland Cavaliers of NBA?

6. Roaring tiger vs yelling Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal.

5. The tiger chooses chicken for dinner. Winner of Tour of France 2009 Alberto Contador Velasco prefers to bite a banana during the competition!

4. Jumping through a hoop? It is easy for both the tiger and Russian gymnast Daria Kondakova!

3. The tiger spings on prey. German goalkeeper Oliver Rolf Kahn springs to capture a shooting football.

2. Tigers fighting in water vs girls

in wrestling mud.

World's Bizarre Structure - Giant Pin Cushion.

Just take a glance at the relatively tiny man in the bottom left-hand corner of the photograph below to gain a measure of the scale of this bizarre structure that looks like a giant pin cushion.

The 'Seed Cathedral', the intended centrepiece of the United Kingdom Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, also comes with an equally enormous bill for the British taxpayer.

Costing £25million to build, the 60ft-high cube-like construction is covered by 60,000 quivering, transparent acrylic rods, received investment from eight Government departments and agencies.

It was organised by UK Trade & Investment, a government agency which promotes British companies abroad.

It's purpose is to present a dynamic view of Britain to the outside world and counter persistent Chinese perceptions of a Victorian-era UK.

UKTI chief executive officer Sir Andrew Cahn said: 'The Chinese view of Britain is a rather old-fashioned one; it’s all to do with Britain as being a heritage country, a traditional economy - there’s an awful lot of cobblestones and fog.

'It hopes that updating Chinese preconceptions will attract foreign investors and students to Britain, as well as encourage exports between the two countries.

'We think of Britain as a cutting-edge, forward-looking country.'

So, as Britain faces a national debt of nearly £800billion, the organisers' fingers must be hoping it wows wealthy visitors and doesn't leave us a laughing stock as well as further out of pocket.

The Foreign Office, which oversees UKTI, would not disclose at how much taxpayers' cash had been used to build the Seed Cathedral.

A spokesman for the department told Mail Online tonight that the full details could not be obtained until tomorrow morning.

He said that five corporate sponsors had also invested in the Shanghai project and when asked if the majority of the cash was public money, the spokesman would only say a 'large chunk of it was'

The building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, who is best known for The B of the Bang sculpture in Manchester, and it was inspired by the UK’s public parks and gardens to meet the Expo’s brief of 'Better City, Better Life'.

He also created the East Beach Cafe in Littlehampton, the Rolling Bridge in London and the Blue Carpet in Newcastle.

He is also a senior fellow and external examiner at the Royal College of Art and a fellow of the Royal Academy.

The World Expo starts later this year and lasts six months.

Cal Orko - 294 Species Of Dinosaurs Tracked

Cal Orko - 294 Species Of Dinosaurs Tracked

Cal Orcko (Voice Quechua Cal Urqu, 'Hill of Cal') is a paleontological site, found at the quarry at a factory of cement, in Bolivia (FANCESA), department of Chuquisaca. It is the site with traces of dinosaurs in the world, as it contains over 5,000 tracks of 294 species of dinosaurs.

The discovery is an enormous contribution to history and science, revealing data heretofore unknown about the end of the period Cretaceous and the beginning of the Tertiary, about 66 million years, thus documenting the high diversity of dinosaurs better than any other place in the world.

Until its discovery, the largest and most important site was Khjoda-Pil-ata, in Turkmenistan, and others in Portugal, Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland. But as Cal Urqu none, since it is several times larger than either of them elsewhere in the world only up to 220 tracks were only two species.
